2 football terms
•• Правила «американского футбола» (в Америке европейский футбол называют soccer, а «свой» – football), не в пример бейсбольным, довольно просты. Ясна и цель игры – занести мяч в зачетное поле противника (за лицевую линию) и затем получить дополнительные очки путем удара по воротам. Форма ворот и мяча – как в регби.
•• Футбол, как и бейсбол, пользуется в Америке огромной популярностью. Это один из Great American Sports. Поэтому надо представлять себе смысл основных терминов этой игры и знать выражения, вошедшие в обиходный словарь.
•• call the shots/signals – руководить игрой, определять стратегию (это функция разыгрывающего – quarterback);
•• carry the ball – брать игру на себя, брать на себя ответственность;
•• cheap shot – неспортивный/запрещенный прием, в споре: некорректный/сомнительный/примитивный аргумент;
•• end run – хитроумный маневр;
•• huddle – «уговор» (перевод условный): момент, когда игроки во главе с разыгрывающим собираются «в кружок», чтобы выслушать план очередного розыгрыша мяча, который определяет quarterback (в этот момент он calls the shots);
•• on the sidelines – примерно то же самое, что у нас на скамейке запасных. В переносном смысле – отошедший от активной деятельности;
•• quarterback – разыгрывающий, лидер команды. В переносном смысле – формальный или неформальный лидер. Интересно и широко распространено выражение Monday morning quarterback – человек, крепкий задним умом. Дело в том, что игры в высших профессиональных лигах проводятся по воскресеньям, а в понедельник перипетии матча обсуждают болельщики, часто недовольные решениями разыгрывающего;
•• Superbowl – Суперкубок (игра между командами – чемпионами двух высших профессиональных лиг). Часто употребляется в переносном значении – высший трофей, предмет вожделений.
•• * Иногда употребление выражений спортивного происхождения становится предметом критики. Одно из них – to move the goal posts – совершенно несправедливо, на мой взгляд, было отнесено Plain English Campaign к разряду abused and overused phrase. (Как и многие защитники «правильной речи», эта организация иногда явно перегибает палку.)
•• Между тем это выражение удачно описывает определенный тип ситуации, встречающейся далеко не только в американском футболе. Возьмем, например, фразу Euro members move their fiscal goalposts – сказано сжато и ясно. Кроме того, одним из признаков яркости и нужности фразеологизма является, по-моему, трудность нахождения подходящего соответствия в других языках, как в этом случае. Можно попытаться передать это как неожиданно выдвинуть новые требования, но это будет тяжеловато, можно попробовать кальку передвигать ворота или заменить выражением из другого вида спорта ( повышать планку), но здесь есть опасность неясности или неточности. Лучше всего, наверное, менять правила ( по ходу игры). В приведенном выше примере – Члены еврозоны меняют правила по ходу игры.
